A listening archive of Black American music · 406 records
406 records that were never just records.
Music doesn't just make you dance or feel good. It tells history. It confirms a place, a date, a community, proof that something happened here, to these people, in this exact year, and here's what it sounded like living through it. Streaming buried all of that. A song shows up on a playlist with no year attached, no city, no idea what was happening outside the studio door the week it got cut. This archive puts it back on the record.
Every chapter runs the same interrogation: what the artist carried into the room, what the country was doing to Black people that year, what got made anyway. Marvin's brother, mailing him letters from Vietnam. Nas, twenty years old, a window looking out on Queensbridge and a four-track tape deck. Context isn't a footnote here. It's the whole point.
Then you go back to the tracks, but with real questions this time, the kind that make you hear something on the fourth listen you missed on the first three. Then further out still: a film, a photographer whose eye caught the same year, a block you can actually stand on. The record stops being content you scroll past. It starts being a door.

103Church voices pointed at the state. Freedom songs, then funk as its own kind of argument, then Sun Ra taking the whole thing off-planet.

100Quiet storm and everything downstream of it. Music built for 2am radio, where the ballad does structural work and the voice carries the load.
